Jaana Niinikoski, Ph.D.

Dr. Niinikoski provides psychological assessment, individual psychotherapy, and group therapy to children, adolescents, and adults.

Special areas of interest include Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, learning disabilities, test anxiety, stress management, depression, grief reactions, and panic disorder.

Dr. Niinikoski also offers psychological testing for the school system's gifted program and provides training in positive parenting and discipline.

Joseph E. Maio, Ph.D.

Dr. Maio works with people from young adulthood through old age.

Dr. Maio offers individual, couple, and group psychotherapy. He also does psychological testing to measure intellectual abilities, memory, attention problems, and personality characteristics.

Special areas of interest include depression and bipolar disorder, grief reactions, anxiety disorders (such as obsessive-compulsive disorder and panic disorder), chronic pain, substance abuse, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, stress management, and dementia. Dr. Maio also provides psychotherapy for relationship issues, divorce adjustment, the stress associated with being a family caregiver, and survivors of traumatic events.

Our Qualifications

Dr. Niinikoski and Dr. Maio are licensed as psychologists by the Board of Examiners in Psychology in Alabama.

Dr. Niinikoski earned her Master’s degree from the University of Helsinki in her native Finland, and later was a Fulbright Fellow at the University of Oregon from 1987 to 1988. Dr. Niinikoski completed her doctorate at the University of Alabama in Birmingham in 1995. She is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Alabama. She is fluent in English, Finnish, and Swedish.

Dr. Maio earned his Bachelor’s degree from Arizona State University in 1979 and his doctorate from the University of Alabama in 1985. He is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Alabama.
